BAHAMA SAGA is a chronicle of the human presence on a unique
archipelago of the Americas. The story takes its title from a few
invented characters and the romantic and beautiful country of seven hundred
sub-tropical islands.

The confetti of Bahamian islands has, at different times, been a locus
for the three races of the planet. After the original Amerindian inhabitants
perished, the Bahamas remained uninhabited for nearly 150 years
until people from Bermuda - largely of English and African stock -
re-settled the islands commencing in 1648. 
Not long afterwards many more Africans were brought to the Bahamas in bondage. 
Their descendants today hold the destiny of the islands in their hands.

The geographical location of the Bahamas allowed the islands to play a brief, but
important part in the history of the modern world.  The eastern islands protrude out into the Atlantic Ocean so as to make them one of the nearest parts
of the Americas to Europe and
it was here that an explorer from Europe made
a historic landfall at what, for him at least, was a 'New World’. It was just over five hundred years ago
that Christopher Columbus in 1492 ‘sailed
the ocean blue’. The islands on the western side are a mere 50 miles from
the United
States. Throughout time, events on the North American continent have had a
major affect upon the history of the Bahama Islands as
this well-written and intriguing story relates.

About the Author
Peter Barratt has had a love affair with The Bahamas and its multi-faceted history since he first visited the islands in 1960. A British-trained architect with a degree in urban and regional planning from Harvard, Barratt's extensive knowledge of the Bahama Islands grew as the town planner formerly in charge of the development of the new city of Freeport . . . the early days of which he has written about in his book, Grand Bahama. An avid amateur archaeologist and founder of the Lucayan National Park, he has written many articles and papers about the Bahamas. A tennis player and licensed pilot, Barratt also sails and dives the amazing waters of the Bahamas as he continues to explore the waves of tide and time that have brought together so many different people from around the world to its tropical shores.

Like slogging through freshman english papers...

While the author's enthusiasm for the history of the Bahamas is clear, and he seems to have done his research, the poor writing and apparent lack of editing renders the reading experience almost excruciating. Wading through grammatical blunders and awkward language (and even repeated sentences and paragraphs - seriously!), I found the compulsion to edit the work overpowered my ability to attend to the narrative.
The ineffective attempt to blend fact and fiction is also incredibly distracting. I kept finding myself wondering which is which, rather than simply going along for the experience. I held out for 65 pages before encountering a sex scene so jarring in its awkwardness that I felt the urge to join a convent. That was the last time I picked the book up.
I felt pretty duped by spending a sum of money on this book, and in sharing my frustration with a colleague, she mentioned that Amazon now sells self-published books. I now feel like an idiot for not noticing the title of the publisher, "1st Books Library," whose website calls out for unpublished authors to send their manuscripts. Apparently those manuscripts are sent straight to press, evading the scrutiny of any of those pesky interfering editors. Note to self: check out the publisher next time.

Barratt's "Saga" Lives Up To Its Name

Peter Barratt's Bahama Saga: The Epic Story of the Bahama Islands lives up to its title. The epic is a sensuous sweep of Bahamian history, a vivid result of his love affair with the Islands. From the first chapter, when humans set foot in the Americas, to the last chapter, when the flag of Independence lifts into the Bahamian sky, Barratt's epic is richly textured with historical detail and human motivation.
"Saga" is a wonderful cross-genre, a blurring of distinctions between genres as with opera and straight play. Barratt's cast of fictional personalities plays against the backdrop of exciting episodes in Bahamian history complete with their choruses of fated Lucayans, lustful Spaniards, adventurous Bermudians, bold pirates, enslaved Africans, exiled Loyalists, thirsty rum-runners, sun-worshipping tourists.
The book is structured in two parts. In Part I, the Lucayans discover and colonize the Bahamas; Columbus and the Conquistadors re-discover and de-populate the Bahamas. Part II follows the major waves of re-colonization by the Eleutheran Adventurers, African Slaves and American Loyalists; the book closes with chapters on Emancipation and the political/economic development of the Bahamas.
The author uses an informal voice, even for the historical narration. In true "saga" fashion, asides and digressions abound to enlighten and amuse. In much the style of classic epics or 18th century English novels, Barratt's historical and fictional narratives mix and mingle as he traces two families of different races down through the centuries until they merge at the end.
Barratt creates the story of Tsgot, the first explorer to discover the Bahama Islands. Tsgot's ancestors were the Asians who crossed the land bridge to discover and settle the continents of North and South America and later the major islands of the Caribbean. Once colonization of the Bahamas began and trade was established, other Lucayan adventurers set out in their dugout canoes to explore more islands. In his depiction of this Lucayan odyssey, Barratt evokes magical images with sumptuous descriptions of the pristine islands and a thesaurus of colors to paint the water. As he introduces each island discovered, he forecasts the role those islands will play to future visitors as the centuries move on. One island, Grand Bahama, is significant in that today The Lucayan National Park, founded by the author, preserves a 40-acre portion of the "golden isle" first enjoyed by the Lucayans as their canoes rode the "crystal clear waters" of the "fast-moving creek ... arched over with vegetation," which was for them and for us "a magical journey."

One of the best erotic romances I've ever read!

This is a wonderful love story to indulge your fantasies in without having to censor anything. About an indian man who spots a bathing white woman in the woods during the days when whites & indians were still warring with each other. When she sees him, she runs. He pursues her until she relents. Willingly. All this in the first chapter. This book is only 54 pages long but that phrase "dynamite comes in small packages" is oh so true here. The heroine is a virgin but with only 54 pages, no time for drama and game playing. But don't get me wrong, everything here is consensual. I'd never recommend a book otherwise.
The sexual heat that these two can generate will have you on page 54 before you can take a breath and say, "WOW". Thank goodness she does't use any fillers or feel that she has to pad the book and make it longer. She doesn't bore you with pages of scenery and descriptions of the outfits the heroine is having made for her. Boring is one word you will not utter when discussing this book. Think you'll get bored with the erotic content after they've gotten together more than once? Think again. Each intimate moment is unique and gets hotter and hotter as you get further into the book.
What this book does is fill a category that has been ignored and never addressed until now. It's about time. I love reading romance novels but sometimes, I want more details. My biggest complaint when reading G or PG rated romance novels was that these were fine for teenagers to read but what about us non-blushing, non-virgin adults who want more than the vague hints at the intimacy between the two main characters? After all, Susan Johnson can write only so fast. But one is not a substitue for the other. Ms. Black is much more fast paced due to the short length (but you still get a plot that's easy to follow) and their writing styles altho great, differ. SJ can do snappy & smart dialogue that'll soak your panties. But I enjoy both their writing and I put them at the top of the list of erotic romance writers. Both are miles above R.Schone, T.Devine, and even Bertrice Smalls.
Erotica leaves me cold. I don't blush but then again, I don't want anything sick or disgusting either and that seems to be the trend in erotica these days. That's why I'm so glad this niche is being filled. Call me old fashioned but I want them to make love and declare a commitment to each other. Think of this as mainstream romance with all the dirty parts still intact! This erotic romance was so hot that it burnt me to a crisp. I was left sizzling. Most of all, it reads well. The author is a well established romance writer and it shows. (I just found out today from her web site that Nikita Black is her pen name.)([...]) Her writing & delivery is smooth. Therefore, Renegade's woman has these three things: Romance, sizzling-graphic-consensual love making, and great writing to carry it all off without a hitch. I repeat, "IT'S ABOUT TIME!"

RED HOT HISTORICAL!!

This is truly romantic erotica! It's so hard to find this sub-genre in historical form. If you are looking for really erotic love story, with lots of red hot love scenes between ONLY the hero and heroine, this is it!
Although no longer available here, you can still get it from the author's website.
Let's hope some smart publisher like Brava or Kensington picks up this author (Nina Bruhns writing as Nikita Black.) for print. This would be a sure bet for an erotic anthology!!

really really stupid

After reading all the 5 star reviews I expected at least a somewhat decent story. This book is one of the dumbest I've ever read. The indian hero wants to take the white girl captive but can't because it might ruin trade with a passing wagon train and cause his village to get attacked....what? So for several days they just keep sneaking off to have sex and nobody notices. Then on the actual day of the trade the indian's white aunt who used to be a captive comes with the indians and none of the white people raise a fuss about them having a white woman. The white aunt then convinces the entire wagon train to let the girl marry the hero in the spirit of promoting peace between both people. The prejudice white people not only allow it, there's a priest on hand who willingly performs the ceremony and then and there and they live happily ever after. The whole story was idiotic and contrived.

And if none of that sounds stupid enough to you, how about the part where the indian hero of the story makes butt beads out of vine and berries and sticks them in the heroine's butt to spice things up. Because what woman doesn't want berries shoved in her butt? Yea...the author was that ridiculous.

Finally a good romance with no misunderstandings

I so enjoyed reading this novel, in fact, I liked it the best of the three. I felt so sorry for Matt in the first 2 books and was glad to see he met "the one" even if it was the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend. Hope was perfect for Matt and I loved the way the romance developed. They forged a friendship before hopping into bed and the connection between Matt and Hope was so genuine. But what I liked the best was the author's skill at writing a sensual romance without the stupid misunderstandings that are so prevalent in todays' romances. There were two scenes where either Matt or Hope could have stormed off in a rage after Helen's shenanigans to break them apart but they trusted each other enough to learn the truth. This was a refreshing and very steamy romance and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Sexy and sweet cowboy yummy-goodness at its best! Rocky Mountain Desire and Matt Coleman rocked!!! I thoroughly enjoy my time with Ms. Arend's Canadian cowboys and Matt was no slouch! I know some of you readers have been waiting a lot longer for his story, but since I just recently discovered this series I was lucky enough not to have to wait too long for it. So let me tell you about Matt.

We have been through a lot with Matt. In book one he was dating his high school sweetheart, the only girl he'd ever had sex with (same for her, he was the guy she gave her virginity to). The sweet as honey middle Coleman brother wanted desperately to marry her and start their life together. She had other plans. First it started with wanting to have another man added in the mix of the sexcapades for spicyness. When that wasn't enough, she went chasing the dream of the big city and the occasional orgy. Cheated on him and then ran out of town, leaving him high and dry, humiliated and destroyed.

We suffered through all that with him. So when this book started out and he falls in immediately lust with a sometimes "dancer", I was dubious. When we find out this said "dancer" is also his ex's little sister, all my red flags went up. I'm not a big fan of the little sister of the ex girlfriend having had a crush on the guy since forever and then all of a sudden they can make a relationship work.

Well, I am here to admit that Ms. Arend shut me up on that, brilliantly! Matt and Hope are so perfect together! She gives as good as she gets, she's no floormat with either Matt or her sister. She's independent, a fighter, and she's not throwing herself at Matt at every chance she can get! He did the chasing!! And boy was it entertaining!!!! Watching him trying to out-do the other guy.

And when things finally started heating up and sizzling between these two they were ON FIRE! Hope wants to give up control and Matt was more than happy to help her out!

Then there's the whole Coleman family!! I love all of them, from the sexy and smexy twins all the way down to the Coleman mom & dad. He even helped his son make a quilt!! *wipes tear away* LOL

Now, when can I get some more hot, wild, cowboy lovin' again, Ms. Arend? I need another Coleman fix!

Adore this series - this is best yet, sexy love story

Matt Coleman may have gotten hooked into planning his brother Daniel's bachelor party but he's not all that interested in family fun. He's still not over his cheating ex-girlfriend dumping him and skipping town but he'd really like some female companionship of the doesn't-stick-around kind. Just as he's pondering his lack of options, one of the dancers hired for the night's entertainment catches his eye - she looks a whole lot like his ex. The dancer knew Matt and had been attracted to him, but instead of his ex, the horrible Helen, she was her younger sister, Hope. There's embarrassment all around, with a double helping for Hope - not only was she drooling over Matt, she's got a respectable quilt shop and was only there dancing as a favor for a friend and really doesn't want it getting out.

They don't see each other for months, time that Matt still needed to get past some of the worst of his bitterness toward Helen. He still feels a little weird about Hope - he's attracted to her, but should he be? He rescues her from a snowbank and they rescue each other from hypothermia - his family helps with the rest, giving him the push he needs to start seeing Hope for who she is, not just as Helen's sister.

All of the Coleman brothers are pretty exceptional but Matt has been my favorite. Helen managed to make him doubt himself and there weren't any simple fixes even if he is a natural Grade A Alpha. When Helen left Rocky Mountain, she didn't just dump Matt, she left Hope in the lurch too, on the hook for rent and solely responsible for the quilt shop. At odd moments in the story, they would bond as survivors of Helen and at others, struggle to hold onto each other in spite of her. Hope and Matt have some unbelievably hot love scenes - seriously break the ice water out hot.

The same family atmosphere is back in Rocky Mountain Desire that was present in the first two books that I adored so much. Jaxi and Blake have their girls now, Daniel and Beth have their family and it's fun to continue to watch the youngest Coleman twins Jesse and Joel continue to reel the girls in and to try to solve the mystery of brother Travis. Now that Hope's joined the family, there are quilting circles and even more about the guys down at the garage.

I always say this about each prior book, but you know, this is my favorite book in the series yet. Matt and Hope were the most compatible couple imaginable, the joy of the book was watching the two of them figure it out - no misunderstandings, no big event and grovel, no manufactured drama - just two people figuring out the past and getting around to the future. The long, slow slide they took into love was perfect for them and exactly the way it had to be given their history. Matt's proposal/non-proposal/sort-of-missed proposal was the sweetest, most original and "them" that I could imagine.

You can read each book as something of a standalone but they are so, so much better read as a series in order. The first two are expanded, revised versions of earlier works and this is a brand new story. Rocky Mountain Heat: Six Pack Ranch, Book 1 Rocky Mountain Haven: Six Pack Ranch, Book 2
