Some sins are impossible to forgive…

Ruthless and devilishly handsome, former Bow Street Runner Trevelyan Foxton has been hired to find a missing debutante. But the woman who holds the key to the girl’s disappearance is the one woman Lyan vowed he would never see again. After all, when a young man proposes marriage and gives his virginity to his beloved, he’s going to be furious when she steals his money and runs away.

Some men are impossible to resist…

Haunted by dark secrets, Estelle Desjardins was forced to desert Lyan ten years before, take half his money, and disappear. She has built an independent life as a dressmaker and secretly helps young ladies escape loveless arranged marriages. When Lyan comes back into her life, she must lie to him all over again. But he suspects the truth and wages a campaign of seduction and pleasure that melts all her defenses…

A shorter version of this story was published as “Gretna Green” in the Mammoth Book of Regency Romance, 2010. This novella is greatly expanded and hotter.

Length: 20,500 words/84 pages

*****
A pin jabbed her tongue. Estelle spat them all into her hand. The attention of every woman in her salon was riveted on Lyan, but he had eyes only for her as he slowly stepped into her shop. He took off his beaver hat as he ducked under the doorway, revealing his striking coal-black hair and the one streak of white that began at his temple and followed the sweep of his unfashionably long tresses to his shoulder.

“Madame Desjardins,” he said, with a perfunctory bow. He straightened, then ensured he closed the door behind him. A sardonic smile lifted his lips as the bell tinkled. “Is it intended to mean ‘Star of the Gardens’? I like that very much.”
Her stomach almost dropped away. What did Lyan want? “May I help you, Mr. Foxton?”

The buzz began.

“Goodness, Mr. Foxton is a Bow Street Runner,” whispered Lady Amelia to her bosom-bow, Lady Caroline Trent.

Lady Caroline put her gloved hand to her mouth and her blue eyes glittered with thrilled delight. “What is he doing here? Do you think there’s been a crime here?”

“Other than the prices?” muttered Lady Caroline’s mother.

“Have you heard?” one young lady whispered. “It is said that Mr. Foxton is the heir to the Earl of Delamore.”

Estelle froze. She took care to know the gossip of the ton. How could she not have known this? Yet if there was any ordinary man who possessed the autocratic beauty of a gentleman of the ton, it was Lyan.

“That cannot be true,” declared the voluptuous Countess of Bournemouth. “I heard that he grew up in the East End stews. It is rumored he has a very sordid past.” She said it in a breathy purr, as though “sordid” was a commendable thing.

“I think he is trying to look down Lady Armitage’s bodice!”

That would not surprise her. Lyan had always enjoyed playing the rogue. At this very moment, he appeared to be enjoying shocking her clients. “Madame Desjardins,” he began, in a voice that had deepened and roughened and grown even more magnetic in ten years. “I hate to trouble you, but I would like a private word.”

The ladies gasped, for that meant he must walk through her shop, past the curtained rooms in which women stood in various states of undress. Estelle squared her shoulders and banished her quivers. She had learned to be strong to survive in London’s stews. She would not let Lyan’s presence make her feel like an uncertain girl again.

“Miss Sims, advise the ladies to keep their curtains closed,” she instructed her best seamstress. With brow raised and what she hoped was a cool, placid expression firmly fixed in place, she turned to Lyan. “Mr. Foxton, you may come to my office. I assume a respectable representative of Bow Street will keep his eyes averted.”

A novella that gives a different slant on Regency life
By Elf2060
"Sinful" is a novella by Sharon Page that explores Regency society from a different perspective. Estelle Desjardins is a successful dressmaker who caters to Society women but finds herself in the unique position of being able to aid those young debutantes who are being forced into loveless marriages but who already have a beau that their guardians/parents would not consider eligible. She considers it to be her mission to investigate the prospective grooms and has both facilitated some escapes as well advised against others. She is startled to discover that the Bow Street Runner Trevelyan (Lyan) Foxton, who shows up investigating her, is none other than the same person she gave her heart and body to when they were both in society's underbelly. The two find themselves forced to be guarded allies but also working at cross-purposes. Current circumstances dictate that Estelle keep even more secrets from the man that she still has strong feelings for but Lyan may never recover from the shock of her betrayal.

A wonderfully entertaining vignette that covers an amazing breadth of detail in a very compact tale. The characters have depth and emotion that encompasses both their past and present situations and as usual, Ms. Page explores the roles of those who occupy positions outside of the usual aristocratic echelons that people typical Regency romances. A nicely romantic tale.

Why did the hero love this heroine?
By Jessantonia
Lyan and Sally (now Estelle) grew up together in a rough neighborhood but after their night together where they agreed to marry she leaves him and doesnt see him again until 10 years later. Although I can understand why Estelle left Lyan, I dont get why then would she help other woman marry for love yet doesnt give herself the opportunity to do so? Clearly he still loves her and yet she still refuses to trust him and gives excuses on why they cant be together again. Ok so she has a fear due to what her mother said and went through, yet is willing to put other women into that potential path - oh but it's ok because she does background checks of the potential men before agreeing to help these women elope - yet she cant trust the one man who has more than proved himself - practice what you preach woman! I thought she was stubborn and stupid and to make matters worse she doesnt tell Lyan about her suspicion about his sister. Oh and let's not forget the daughter he never knew about. Im sorry but there was nothing to like about her. The potential was there but the reasons of why the heroine acted the way she did were in my opinion weak and I cannot recommend this novella. Lyan was great though but Estelle didnt deserve him and I really dont know why he loved her and why he forgave everything she did to him so quickly. I wish Lyan had been more reserve and took pride in himself and didnt so easily time and time again try to convince Estelle to be his. Oh and how convenient that Lyan was now to become the lost earl, it should have stayed between the shop owner and the bow street runner!

Hot, historical romance!
By Marie
I loved this story! Trevelyan and Estelle have a complicated history and when Trev comes back into her life sparks fly. Estelle left Trev years before directly after they slept together for the first time (both losing their virginity to each other) and took half his money. Even though this sounds like an awful thing to do, Estelle is a wonderful woman who makes up for her mistakes. She's had a hard life and struggled to make a success of herself. She makes dresses for the wealthy women in society but secretly helps young women escape to Gretna Green to get married to men of their choosing if they want to avoid loveless marriages.

Bow Street Runner Trevelyan has been hired to find a missing debutant and his investigation leads him right to Estelle's dress shop. He knows she's lying to him about not having a clue where the missing woman might be and the heat that unfolds between them at seeing each other after so long is scorching. Even though at first he's rightfully angry at her, his pursuit of her is very sweet. Sinful is a great story about forgiveness and reunited lovers. I love second chance stories and this one is bite-sized and perfect for when you don't have time to read a full novel. There was just enough intrigue, suspense and romance to make this story perfectly balanced.
