Where is Faithfulness and Loyalty? What happens when Wes finds someone to Kiss?

It was good to be back in the world of Hunters and werewolves again, but the only character we really get to see in this story is Tara. It is not like a typical second book which is normally just character development driven. This one introduces a completely new cast of characters and could really stand on its own. If you read it first in the series, you will fall in love with Alex and wonder why Tara even likes Wes. And that is what bothers me about these stupid love triangles - where is the loyalty?

***SPOILERS***

Tara goes to school to learn to be a hunter while Wes stays home to learn how to lead The Cause. Tara's new trainer is sexy senior Alex and it is no mystery that these two are going to be attracted to each other. He has already saved her life in the last book at the wherehouse and ends up saving her life in this book several times. He is attracted to her and knows she has a boyfriend, but can't stay away from her. Wes comes on a full moon to read Tara's thoughts and sees that she has kissed Alex. He is surprisingly understanding about it all.

Love triangles may be interesting plot lines but where is loyalty and faithfulness? Besides this is so sexist. What if Wes was kissing another girl while Tara was at school being faithful? He'd be a jerk so why isn't she? I wish the authors would just have the first couples break up and leave them FREE to pursue another love interest. I kept wishing Wes would tell Tara that he had kissed Victoria while she was on assignment with him and let Tara have a little taste of what that would feel like. Playing with the affections of both boys is wrong and she knows it.

Wes has to deal with a lot for the Cause behind the scenes and apparently finds it more important than keeping Tara safe. This really makes the reader prefer Alex and wonder if Tara and Wes really are soulmates. There was a totally unsatisfying reunion between Wes and Tara on a full moon and Tara's attitude was nothing short of immature. She is kissing Alex behind Wes's back and she is mad at him for reading her mind? Please!

Overall, I like Heather Hildebrand's style of writing as it is easy to read and not too repetitive. You get a lot of story for the price and it is interesting read. I just am getting so tired of these love triangles and the lack of commitment to one another. It seems that it is fine if the girl is stringing two guys along, but not if the guy is stringing two girls along. Neither situation is right and the reader needs to see that what Tara is doing is mean.

Best werewolf and hunter story out there!

The best werewolf/hunter series I have ever read! I am already itching to start the third book. If you liked Dirty Blood, you will love Cold Blood. Tara is sent off to Boarding School and the kids are pretty awful, but Tara finds a couple of good ones in the bunch. I really enjoyed meeting some of the new characters in this story like Logan and Cambria (Cambria Hebert that is, ha ha I see what you did there Heather ;) )And of course, Alex. More on Alex later.

Tara was great in Cold Blood. She is still impulsive as ever, but honestly I don't think I would like her any other way. A few times, I wish she would have given her friends a little more credit, but I get why she was hesitant. Cambria is hilarious. I instantly liked her, just like she instantly liked Tara. I loved it when she said that they were future BFFs on her first day after everyone else was so awful. And Logan is such a sweetie. I just wanted to hug him.

We don't get to see too many of the original characters from the first book because they are still all back at home and still working on Cause things. New setting, new people, but the story was just as great. I was instantly absorbed back into the lives of Tara, Wes, and now Alex. Ok, now lets talk about Alex. Alex is Tara's new trainer at school. We saw him in the warehouse fight very briefly at the end of the first book, but he plays a huge role in this story. He is a new potential love interest for Tara. Making this story officially a love triangle. And just so you know something about me, I am almost ALWAYS team guy #1, which would be Wes. I don't know why. I get to know them first and form attachments to them and then I am loyal to the first guy. But with this story, I found myself liking Alex more and more. I don't think I have ever been as conflicted in a love triangle! Darn you Alex for being so great! I still love Wes, but we didn't get to see too much of him in this book and Alex is a really great guy. And I think he might just be a little better for Tara. Ahh! I don't know. I will have to leave my decision until the next book.

Tara goes through new hunter training and she also goes through some changes. I was just as curious as Tara was about her new temper, and what her "gift" might be. We still don't know, but we are left with a crazy glimpse into it at the end of the book. Book three is going to be nuts. Heather Hildenbrand does a fabulous job writing excellent characters and she keeps the plot moving at a perfect speed. You will not be able to put this book down. This is now my go to series for werewolf or hunter recommendations.

Wow, its not often a sequel is even better then the first book but Cold Blood was amazing!

Tara is shipped off to a boarding Hunter school. Wes is in training to take over The Cause. Miles is still out there and leaving Tara threatening messages . Tara has to learn to fight. She also has to deal with everyone at her new school hating her and making fun of her for being a Dirty Blood. Then we meet a lot of new characters that I totally loved.

I remember that I loved Wes from book 1 but in book 2, I am like Wes who? I am totally in love with Alex! I love him. And I think he is great for Tara. He treats her like an equal when Wes sends her a babysitter to watch her every move. Alex is just great and I really loved every time him and Tara where together. You will just have to see it for yourself.

I totally think you should read book 1 first. That way you have the whole story or you might be a little confused. Both of these books were great and I really enjoyed them. I am super excited for book 3. This leaves you off on a cliffhanger and I really want to know what is going to happen. Something is obviously changing in Tara, what will happen to George and will Tara choose to try it out with Alex (please say yes!) Great book!!!!

A biography and a half

What a fascinating read. I'm no science student and yet Ferguson's simple explanations of the most complex theories makes one feel like one might be able to understand what Hawking is talking about. This isn't the first Kitty Ferguson book I've read and I certainly hope it won't be the last as her voice helps illuminate people, theories and periods in time in such an accessible, interesting and at times humorous way. Highly recommend. (note I see a reviewer here only gave it two stars, hmmm.... See he also gave To Kill A Mocking Bird only two also. Go figure)

The Modeler of the Universe

To many people Stephen Hawking is an icon of mathematical genius, a symbol somewhat like Einstein has become. Kitty Ferguson's biography does a terrific job of making Hawking a full-fledged human being, a statement that sounds silly until one sees the hero worship that often attaches to Hawking's name. She alternates between Hawking's personal life and his achievements in astrophysics. Readers in Britain may be much more familiar with the personal aspects of Hawking's life given the press coverage. But in the United States the man who held the Lucasian Chair at Cambridge (always followed by the note that Newton held this position) is much more unknown and this biography does a fine job of putting Hawking's entire life into written form.

The role of Jane Hawking in Stephen's life cannot be overestimated. She was there for him through the most critical moments of his disease and it is hard to imagine what would have happened without her. Ferguson details Jane's work and her conflict between her own goals and her role as Hawking's wife. Some other reviews have criticized the book for skirting the charges of abuse to Hawking which followed him during his second marriage. More may be coming out at some point but when the biography was written Hawking refused to discuss the issue. Without his input Ferguson cannot do much more than mention the issue without speculating. Ferguson worked with Hawking closely not only on this book but in her earlier 1991 biography of him. This biography highlights the positive - Hawking's mathematical genius, his genuine sense of humor, his popular books to explain his ideas, and his work for the disabled. But it also goes into some detail about his flaws - his stubbornness, his lack of appreciation at times of those who helped him so much, and what appears to be an excessive love of the limelight. Some of the flaws may be attributed to issues that others may have about him but clearly some were Hawking's own and could be deeply hurtful. The reader gets a well-rounded view of Hawking as a person and the growing effect of the debilitating ALS on his life.

As Ferguson notes, Hawking undercut his own assumptions several times in his work. His beautiful theories were always handicapped by a lack of empirical data, a problem that all theoretical physicists have today. For example, his theories about Hawking radiation, singularities, and wormholes (all of which Ferguson explains well) are utter masterpieces of mathematical reasoning but absolute verification may be impossible. I left the book wishing that the Nobel Committee would recognize theoretical physicists much more than they do. The argument most often made on their behalf is that a beautiful mathematical model may quite simply be wrong and that differing theories not only need unifying but need more proof. On the other hand, geniuses like Hawking have provided ways of mentally and mathematically seeing the options and, at a time when such models have become unbelievably difficult to build, have provided a path for potential research. One of the side effects of this book is that the reader comes to understand much better the interplay of theoretical and experimental physics. Hawking once said that he was fortunate to have gone into theoretical physics because his handicap did not hurt him nearly as much as in most other fields. It is to our lasting benefit that he did so. Flaws and all, Stephen Hawking has given us a stunning (if evolving) vision of the universe that is not only beautifully crafted but inspiring to those with even the smallest interest in astronomy. This book is a tribute to Hawking's life.

Here is a tale in which beginnings are endings, cruel circumstances lead to happiness, although fame and success do not; two brilliant and highly successful scientific theories taken together yield nonsense; empty space isn't empty after all; and black holes aren't black. In the twenty-first century, the effort to unite everything in a simple explanation is revealing, instead, a fragmented picture. And most paradoxical of all, a man whose physical appearance inspires shock and pity has led us joyfully to where the boundaries of time and space ought to be--but are not."

The above comes from this in-depth book by Kitty Ferguson. Ferguson has been writing and lecturing about science and scientists for over two decades. She is the author a seven books.

This book, in a nutshell, is a biography about theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking (born in 1942, three hundred years after the death of Galileo in 1642). Hawking is known for the following:

(1) black holes (a region of space-time where gravity prevents anything, including light, from escaping)
(2) theoretical cosmology (physical cosmology is the study of the universe as a whole)
(3) quantum gravity (concerned with scientific models that unify quantum mechanics or the very small with general relativity or the very large)
(4) Hawking radiation (radiation predicted to be emitted by black holes)
(5) the phenomenal international bestseller "A Brief History of Time" (1988)
(6) the controversial bestseller (written with physicist Leonard Mlodinow) "The Grand Design (2010)

On Jan. 8, 2012, Hawking turned 70. Diagnosed at age 21 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, he had been expected to live no longer than a couple of years. He beat the odds by half a century!

In celebration of this event, Ferguson has brought out this book partly adapted from her 1991 biography of Hawking and that includes new information from the last two decades of Hawking's private and non-private life.

What I especially liked about this book is how Ferguson blends Hawking's biography with his science making this book both enjoyable and comprehensive. All the science is well-presented and easy to understand. (You don't have to understand all the science in order to enjoy this book.)

The book itself is divided into four parts:

(1) 1942 to 1975
(2) 1970 to 1990
(3) 1990 to 2000
(4) 2000 to 2011

There are two sets of black and white glossy photographs. I counted 18 in the first set and 17 in the second.

My favourite picture in the first set has the caption:

"The Cambridge Honorary degree ceremony procession, 1989, with Robert, Jane [Hawking's first wife], and Tim (wearing his father's hat)."

My favorite picture in the second set has the caption:

"Tim, Robert, and Lucy join their father at the White House in 2009."

Throughout this book are good illustrations for aid in understanding the science that's presented.

Don't know the meaning of such terms as "event horizon," "N = 8 supergravity," and "vacuum energy?" Don't worry! There's a helpful glossary to explain such terms.

Finally, there's a few omissions that I found. (I found these curious, but these omissions don't effect this book's readability.):

(1) According to the main narrative and the glossary, Superstring Theory is defined as "the theory that explains the fundamental objects of the universe not as point-like particles but as tiny strings or loops of strings." This is fine but "strings" of what? Ferguson omitted to tell us that they are "strings of vibrating energy." Or more precisely, "one- dimensional entities of vibrating energy."

(2) The significance of the late, great astrophysicist Carl Sagan to the success of "A Brief History of Time." Ferguson omits telling us that Sagan wrote an eloquent introduction to this book. He tells us such things in this introduction that by happenstance in 1974 he witnessed the induction of Hawking into the Royal Society of London, "one of the most ancient scholarly organizations on the planet." He continues:

"In the front row, was a young man in a wheelchair was, very slowly, signing his name in a book that bore on its earliest pages the signature of Isaac Newton. When at last he finished , their was a stirring ovation. Stephen Hawking was a legend even then."

As well, he mentions that Hawking was later the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University,

"a post once held by Newton and later by P.A.M. Dirac, two celebrated explorers of the very large and the very small. He is their worthy successor."

At this time, Sagan was enjoying enormous success with his T.V. series and book entitled "Cosmos" and novel "Contact." In effect, he lent his fame and success to Hawking in order to kick start Hawking's writing career.

(3) I felt that the glossary was incomplete. Ferguson defines all terms especially scientific terms in her main narrative but unfortunately omits some of these terms in her glossary. The only recourse for the reader is to look up a non-glossaried term up in the index and get its definition from the main narrative. This can be tedious.

In conclusion, this book gives us a vivid portrait of both Stephen Hawking and his science!!
