"This is the fascinating account of a journey taken by Gabrielle Lorenz, her husband Paul, and their two young children, Joshua and Rosie, in the 57ft Calder & Hebble keel 'Pauline', which is their home. Their travels aboard the 130-year-old-barge, which began on the inland waterways of northern England, including a nerve-wracking crossing of the North Sea and an extended cruise on the canals and rivers of the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
This is no ordinary cruising tale as the journey and day-to-day life in the places visited is seen from the perspective of both adults and children. Insight is given into how the children, then six and eight, coped with their different lifestyle and how much they learned from their sojourn on distant waterways.
There's no doubt that it was the experience of a lifetime and the spirit of adventure of this intrepid family comes across clearly.
Besides giving plenty of cruising details of the busy waterways of Holland and Belgium and the rural canals of France, the author has the knack of setting the scene. She made me want to find out more about the waterways encountered and the cities, towns and villages along them. Eight maps showing 'Pauline's' route complement the account and whet the appetite for learning more about the European rivers and canals visited. A plan of the barge, black and white illustrations and photographs give additional interest.
The inspiring account concludes with the family settling in for the winter in Burgundy before setting off again on the French waterways the following Easter. Hopefully we will be treated to a sequel at some time in the future!"

Gentle journey

As I read, I travelled with this family on their journey along the waterways of England to the canals of Holland and France. It was all brought alive by the charming pictures all drawn by the author herself. A lovely read for boat people and travellers alike- especially those who might need a bit of encouragement to keep exploring the world after having children.

A really fun read

This is one of the best if not the best book I have read covering living and traveling on the waterways of England and parts of Europe. It is very well written and descriptive without being overly wordy and never overdone. Gabrielle has a gift for making even everyday activities seem more interesting. One thing that stood out was the preparation that went into this adventure even including the classes taken by her as well as her husband. Unlike some books recently read where the success was almost by accident, here it was by good planning and careful research and always listening to others experiences as well. Hearing of the children's excitement and new experiences showed a real understanding of their needs and understanding of the different view children have than adults do of the same things. I enjoyed and would recommend this to others and look forward to a follow up of future adventures. Again Gabrielle thank you for a great read.

Leadership based on virtues, not rules

this follow-up to Covey's enormous and enduring bestseller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he applies the same framework to leadership in organizations. If you have read and remember the first book, you may find little really new in this one, although a slightly different angle on the familiar material may be more rewarding than re-reading the first. Whether or not you agree with or find useful all of Covey's seven habits, the virtue-based approach of this work can deliver the goods more lastingly than rule-based approaches that fail to change your basic method of operating. Drawing on a heritage that goes all the way back to Aristotle, Covey's habit/virtue approach to life and our priorities allows him to show convincingly that business and ethics can comfortably live together. In the midst of the incredible change continually afoot in the Innovation Economy, Covey's message is to find the principle-centered core in ourselves and our organizations. Principle-centered leadership is the natural outcome of applying Covey's original message to those in executive positions of all kinds. What is the downside to this approach? Only that this means no quick fixes. Principles and habits take hard work and may look less attractive than books offering techniques and gimmicks for improved leadership effectiveness. In the end, managers know that this downside is not real, since the quick tricks either don't work or soon fail. "Covey is the all time leadership mentor"

This isn't a book you can read through once and understand thoroughly. Coveys writing style is superb, his understanding of human nature is uncanny.
He starts by forming a simile: the art of leadership is like farming. It requires daily vigilance: planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing, and harvesting--in that order. If a farmer owns a cow, he doesn't just milk it when he feels like it. It is a job which needs to be done twice daily, every day. Managing (Leading) a business is exactly the same, at least if you want it to be done correctly. Many managers/leaders feel that it's okay to run a business on auto-pilot. This may be a fatal error.
Covey uses the same 7 Steps as he uses in the same-titled book. He also compares his 7 Step leadership methods with those of the great W. Edwards Deming. Throughout this book the author guides the leader/person to lead by example. To allow those he leads to be self-leaders, and to feel that they are of great importance to the company.
One of the major aims of Covey is to make a Mission Statement. This, he believes, should be done by all members of a company/corporation/family, etc.. He also stresses the age old Confucious saying, "Feed a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
I have a great deal of respect for this man, and truly believe he walks his talk. As I read this book, many of the concepts pertained to situations in my life which I was dealing with at that very time (a little haunting, perhaps inspired?). I highly recommend this book, as well as any other by this great human being and author.

In this great book by Stephen Covey, we learn Covey's philosophy for creating more meaningful relationships and successes in the workplace. something we should be striving to implement throughout business and industry.
Coveys shows us how to implement these techniques in the home and elsewhere and the result is we will be rewarded with happiness and a fulfilling future.
Prior to reading Principle Centered Leadership, I didn't think it was possible to successfully balance my personal, family and professional life.
Principle Centered Leadership is a great addition to Coveys classic 7 Habits of Highly Successful People.

Why I've given myself the title of “Editor”

Well, the fact is that I edited this book myself. I did not trust anyone else to do it because they would have destroyed my thought process and tried to change what I perceived at the time to be right and correct in my mind.

All honest writers must accept responsibility for their published work and I do not put my name to this novel out of a sense of appropriation, but to be able to respond to any and all criticisms.

If there are bad things, I’ll take the blame. If there are good things, I’ll gladly accept praise. If this book is considered bad, I’ll be forced to recognise it and I would not wish to pass it off as better than it is.

This book was not intended for worldwide circulation, although if it turns out to be, I shall not complain, but I suspect that it will suit very few readers. The style will probably annoy people of literary taste and the contents will alarm the more severe social critics and all my sentiments will be outside the nature of those who do not believe in the fractured virtues of the just.

It will displease those devoted to political correctness and those liberal thinking people who despite all the evidence pointing to the relentless force of evil, will find that men cannot be so evil as to be beyond redemption. It will shock gallant men, annoy and scandalise honest women.

It was written for me, but for sure, it will satisfy the appetites of those who seek to find the truth through integrity. It will be useful to those who, in a climate of social dysfunctionality, have retained a love for honesty.

Unfortunately unoriginal

Fury of Fire is a poor imitation of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but with dragon-men instead of vampires.

Here are just a few examples:

The line up of dragon brothers living in a luxury hidden lair is the Leader, the Best Friend, the Computer Geek ,the Troubled Dangerous Anti-Social One, and another one who didn't make any impression of distinct personality on me besides he's green in dragon form. They have a fussy butler/servant to cook them waffles and do their laundry. There is a homicide detective that can sense dragon "issues". The dragon-men wear "@!*#kickers", they call each other "warrior" and "brother", and they "feed" off "females". They go a dance club where bodies are "writhing", music is pumping, and people are having private time in the dark corners. The brothers sit in the VIP area, and drink brand-name alcohol while looking for their enemies or females to feed off of. The patrons "part like the red sea" when these over six-foot tall sex-gods wearing "leathers", and "rolling" with menace, cross the room. The males like to feed their females. They think of their females as "worthy" or "of worth". The dragon-boys have names along the same lines as the BDB boys. The dragon-boys have magic that makes them invisible to humans. The dragon-boys can't go outside during the day because of the sun light.

Those are just a tiny fraction of the similarities between this story and the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, but you get the idea.

A lot of other things bothered me about this book, but here are the highlights:

At one point, the heroine gets to ask the hero questions about dragon-kind, but the reader doesn't even get to hear it - she thinks about it later, and dribbles out some exposition about their origin story. I don't know how old these dragon men are, but it's implied they can live hundreds of years. Apparently they only remember the last forty years of American human culture - because that's all they use in speech and thought to annoying excess. There is nothing really "dragony" about them.

I struggled to find the romance in this book. The relationship seems to entail instant-love-you-have-no-choice sexual attraction, overly jealous/protectiveness (your mine now and I won't let you go/don't touch or feed from my mate or I'll kill you), calling the heroine "baby" right away (ick), and her not objecting to being called "baby" (ick) - ever. The hero will growl the word "mine" several times. It's not very romantic to force a pregnancy on her. It's probably considered homicide when she gives birth and dies from it.

No one seems to be able to choose or have choices.

While written in multiple POV's, it was often hard to tell how any of the characters were all that different from one another. For the most part all of them (even the girls) thought and spoke in the same imitation BDB style. There was some repeating of ideas and words too, for example several characters used the phrase "get off my duff" in their POV thoughts. Why are supposedly totally different people all using the same unusual word?

The brand name dropping doesn't add anything, and in fact takes away from the story. I don't know what "such and such" cologne smells like, so I've been cheated out of experiencing the story with the character. All the music and pop culture references (which will be meaningless in 5 - 10 years) don't add anything either, and, again, seem like an imitation of the BDB series.

In the end, however, the weakest element of this book was the writing style. The overuse of participial phrases (literally paragraphs of them) and passive sentences became distracting and annoying. Honestly, if I hadn't been bored at the time I would not have finished reading. I didn't care if the hero and heroine ended up together, I didn't really see how either of them changed - and in fact the heroine went from a relatively sensible woman in the beginning, to giving in to the hero, for weak or stupid reasons, leading to a weepy crying mess at the end, where she begged for her hero to literally swoop in and save her. Even then, another dragon boy actually "saves" her before the hero dude shows up to fly her to safety. Either way, I didn't really care.

This debut novel is the beginning to many additional installments.
Bastian is one of the oldest of his kind; an all male race born of human females - dragon-shifters. As leader of the Nightfury dragon clan it is his duty to protect humankind. With their numbers declining he needs to set an example. With only 5 days until the Meridian's axis realign, he has less than a week to find a mate.

"...Be the first to commit, to have a son, to lose his female in child birth."

Myst Munroe, a nurse practitioner, just wants to check on her pregnant patient - Caroline Van Owen. She is still recovering from her mother, Dana's, murder. When she arrives at Caroline's house and discovers her lying in a pool of blood - the flashbacks begin. Her training kicks in and she works to save both mother and her unborn child. Soon Bastian and his first in command, Rikar, arrive dressed as EMS workers - the battle begins.

Bastian feels an immediate attraction to Myst; her energy is unlike anything he has experienced before. Seeing her distress, he feels a compelling need to take care of her. For Bastian, that is something that has never happen before - but it is the one thing that he can't seem to control. When Myst starts to recover from the shock she become desperate, he knows that she will need his help - even if she is reluctant to accept it. Before long, Bastian finds himself unable to maintain his control - he wants to claim Myst for his own.

This is an emotion packed book that will make you laugh and make you cry. Myst's plight comes right off the pages. Her confusion over her feelings for Bastian tears her.
The secondary characters enrich the story. It's a good thing that we will get 2 more installments this year (according to Amazon):

Even if you manage to wade through the non-existent dialogue, the never-ending, inner musings, the gratuitous profanity, the fact that EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. SOUNDS. THE. SAME... How can you get past the fact that the 'hero' kidnaps, rapes and plans to murder the 'heroine'?

That's not romance.

It may take a while for your spine to tingle when you first tackle this enormous volume of good, old-fashioned ghost stories, but eventually the chill sets in. Of course, it's hit-and-miss, with some stories a lot scarier than others. All 50 states and some Canadian provinces offer at least one spooky yarn, if not more. Norman and Scott spent 18 years collecting tales, ranging from the typical (with rattling chains, moans, cold spots, and the like) to the elaborate (the spectral marching soldiers of Indiana's Battle of Tippecanoe, a haunted mine, and the infamous Inn of Seventeen Ghosts in Pennsylvania, for instance). Read with the lights on and in the company of others!!!

Written by Beth Scott and Michael Norman who also wrote Haunted Heartland, and Haunted America, HIstoric Haunted America documented, state by state, and a special section on Canada, alledged true ghostly hauntings.
Like their two previous ghostly efforts, Historic Haunted America described in more details than you'd like, the hauntings in question, and the stories behind it. Some are poignant, but most others are terrifying...with tales of curses, murder, revenge and lost souls.
The most interesting chapter is the one on Hawaii, where the legendary volanic goddess Pele is featured.
I read this book in my bed one night and was so creep out by it that I jumped at every small noise and nearly went into a panic attack when the phone rang.
This book is not for the squeamish.

A treat for anyone who loves horror stories!

If one story doesn't get your blood pumping then the next will! A book that you start reading and you cannot put down till you reach the end. It is created from a combination of actual events that have happened, or still is happening, and the legend behind the events that is researched from whatever documentation that could be found. By the end of the book you will be on the edge of your seat if not from the first story. It is very well written and entertaining for the horror lover that wants to get as close to fear as one can without actually witnessing the event. A great book to read for entertainment and will certainly make you think when you hear noises at night!

Find a ghosts near you.

Michael Norman and Beth Scott have written several books about ghosts and they are all well written and fun to read. Sadly, Beth Scott has passed away and their collaboration has thus ended, but it was good while it lasted.
This book is very well researched and convincing. There is even a bibliography, which is unusual for this type of book. There are not however a lot of bone chilling, now I can't sleep type of stories in this book. That is because this is a book of historic hauntings. Some are still current and ongoing but many of the spooks found within these pages have long since vanished as have many of their haunts. Still, wherever eyewitnesses could be quoted, they were. That always adds to the validity of a ghost sighting.
There are stories to be found here from every state of the Union and every province of Canada, so chances are one of the locations mentioned will be near you. Most interestingly, some of the old stories are updated with new information. For example, most everyone has heard of the Bell Witch but assume it is gone. Norman and Scott have not only examined strange occurrences that are still happening in the Bell Witch Cave but also have talked to some descendants of John Bell. I knew of the happenings in the Cave but was not aware that some in the Bell family believe the Witch is still involved with their clan. Could the Bell family still be haunted? According to this book they just may be.
Unfortunately the authors can't resist putting a few old Indian legends in the book. Some phenomena like the humming river are still active and the legends are an interesting explanation of the cause. Still, many of the old Indian legends were never ghost tails to begin with and just do not belong in this type of book. I may harp on this topic a little too much but it is one of my pet peeves.
This is not the best of this duo's books but it is still well worth a read. This pair views their topic with a bit of skepticism, which if not overdone is a good thing. Their writing is clear and they don't ramble on with useless information just to fill up space. We owe quite a debt to Norman and Scott for all their work collecting ghost stories over the years and their books deserve to be on any ghost aficionado's bookshelf.
