Después de siete años y medio de arduo deambular y de anacoretismo autoimpuesto, Miles Heller regresa a Nueva York, en una humilde vivienda abandonada en Sunset Park en compañía de otros tres ocupas comenzará a rehacer su vida, atar cabos sueltos, enfrentarse a los fantasmas del pasado y a su familia a la que abandono sin explicación previa, pero más que el relato del regreso del hijo prodigo es el relato del efecto que causa la vuelta de Miles en el conjunto ya que su reaparición repercute y modifica la vida tanto de sus progenitores como en el de su novia y sus compañeros de piso, vidas que de una forma u otra ven afectadas sus lealtades, sueños, amores, proyectos de vida y donde de una forma u otra las crisis internas de cada cuál en ciertos momentos de sus existencias provocan rompimientos, acercamientos, tomas de conciencia, determinaciones o nuevos derroteros inesperados.
Novela más narrada que dialogada con un comienzo lento y algo confuso que se va agilizando a medida que nos vamos introduciendo en la maraña de vidas que casuísticamente interactuan, se cruzan, se enfrentan, se atraen o se repelen a conveniencia en el libre albedrío de la vida. Una trama incisiva que disecciona la historia individual de cada personaje y uniéndolos a la trama general crea un todo interactivo lleno de luces y sombras como la vida misma.
