Brave, Unexpected Follow up

My Review
I will start with one word for Cantrip - brave. In this book Ms. McKinnon tears us from the dystopian world of the Refuge and sets us squarely in MODERN day society. Without giving anything away, I will say that one member of the Refuge comes with Narissa into her world, rendering that person the immediate fish-out-of-water for the duration of this part of the story. I find this to be very brave because if readers really loved being "in" the Refuge, they might be frustrated to enter the real world. Of course, if you want to understand the relationship between the two, and the forces tugging Narissa in different directions, this makes plenty of sense. It is also brave to take characters from contrary worlds and make them each adapt to (or at least get to know) each other's worlds. You get to see each place through the eyes of a stranger and you gain understanding from the comparison. There are pros and cons to both worlds and it's this paradox that makes Narissa's choices so much harder. (In case you aren't sure, I admire this choice and enjoyed this shift in the story.)
In Cantrip, Narissa returns home to make sure that her little sister is safe. Immediately upon her return she learns that her absolutely detestable mother is attempting to have her declared DEAD (she's been missing a couple months while she was in the Refuge), so that she can collect her MONEY! Yes, you heard that right. Meet Narissa's worthless excuse for a mother. You find out that Narissa not only had a hard life, she had a REALLY hard life living under tough circumstances and raising a child when she really was one herself. Even the neighbors prove to be dangerous and dark. When Narissa says, "Stupid neighbor boys," she doesn't mean that they pulled her ponytail growing up...it's a lot darker than that.
I find it brave that McKinnon explored all kinds of issues with sexuality. What's "right," what's "wrong," and the pressures on girls to act in certain ways...no matter what their own feelings or inclinations may be. I like that McKinnon herself doesn't portray all the women so simply. Narissa and her sister are not as pure as the driven snow (who is, right ladies?) and with their mother as an example of a stereotype gone wrong, they both struggle to own their sexuality without being destroyed by it.
Family - Narissa will discover that she has more family than she ever knew and you are heartened to have someone FINALLY treat her like a daughter instead of a burden. She also finds out she has a brother...ummmmmm, awkward doesn't begin to describe it. You'll see for yourself.
Romance - Let's just say (no spoilers) that the romance evolves from the first book in a manner that I found to be very satisfying. You can judge for yourself.
One question - There was one aspect of this story that I disagreed with (a minor thing). Narissa ends up forgiving someone and something that I feel like I just couldn't ever forgive. When I read it, I stamped my mental foot and thought No! Don't forgive that --hole! He doesn't deserve it! But when you realize that she does it for herself (forgiving him I mean), then you can come to accept it...maybe. :P
Things always get messier. It seems like when two worlds collide, which is exactly what McKinnon has done, there is bound to be a mess. You might expect Cantrip to answer a lot of questions, and it does, but of course it creates more. How will Narissa make the decision about where to live? Does her sister Maera really need her? Is she really happy in the Refuge, with all the things that aren't a fit for her? What if she doesn't really fit anywhere?
I was lucky enough to have access to book three in this Trilogy right away so that I could get the answers to these questions...but until it's out (which will be soon), the rest of you will have to wait! I suggest you get cracking on reading Cantrip ASAP so that you're ready to follow Narissa all the way to the end of her yellow brick road...

Great Follow-Up Left Me Wanting More!

The second book in the Refuge Trilogy picks up right where we leave Narissa in book one, finding a way back to her sister. Book two has us following Narissa and Damon as they navigate her world, and try to find a way back to the Refuge. I didn't have any trouble finishing this book, and can't wait to see how it continues and ends in book three. You learn a lot more about Narissa and her relationships with family and friends, and you allow yourself to feel the pain and joy as she grows even more during this novel. I don't want to give away too many spoilers, or any really, but if you enjoyed Annexed, Cantrip will not disappoint. I appreciated the author's keeping it at a young adult reading level, and young adult content, so many books seem to be YA but have adult content. Can't wait for book three!
