This is the dream they told her was HER DREAM. She spent a lifetime trying to fulfill a dream that really wasn't hers. Her mommy, a church minister; and Mrs. Miller put a spell on her and sent her down the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard of Oz who would magically give her a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music and present her at Carnegie Hall as the first American-Negro concert pianist to win a scholarship to Curtis Institute of Music. She was told because God gave her such extraordinary talents, he guaranteed this DREAM. She was a very obedient, gullible child. Without the slightest doubt, this five year old child believed every word she was told. She believed she had a contract with God and he would deliver this dream. She sacrificed everything and worked delinquently to fulfill her duty to God.. She earned the honor of being valedictorian of her all girl special high school and a standing ovation when she gave her valedictorian speech. This teenager won two scholarships, one was to the Julliard School of Music in New York City where she would train to be a concert pianist and prepare to be accepted into the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was on her way to fulfill (they say) her dream.
She wanted to prove herself to all her financial sponsors, her friends, and especially her strict mother, who was a minister. Later, teenage Eunice found that the Wizard of Oz wasn't at the end of the Yellow Brick Road, the Scarecrow, the Tin-man, the Cowardly Lion and Dorothy weren't there either. She was dumbfounded and confused. She went to great lengths to keep her mother from learning that she was playing and singing in smoke filled bars, which would be a sin in her mother's eyes... Eunice said. She always carried their dream that one day she would be a famous concert pianist and please all of them and repay the town's people of her heavy debt. to them. Even though she was triumphant in her career and her fans adored her... there was that nagging constant bitter pain in the pit of her stomach, "This isn't Carnegie Hall!!!" "This isn't Curtis Institute!!!" "This isn't what God promised!" This isn't what mommy promised me. Eunice retaliated the promised dream's rejections by fighting for all causes and appeared at civil rights demonstrations and sometimes blew off her audience. She was denied the dream over and over again. It made no sense to Eunice. Her music became combative. She never smoked before or drank. Her upbringing and church teachings never allowed that. Now at every bar, there was always a drink sitting on her piano and a cigarette dangling from her lips as she pounded out the songs the audience requested... demanded!! She never dreamed of being a singer or consider anything other than being recognized as a world famous concert pianist illuminating the true acoustics of Carnegie Hall to fulfill her pledge to God and the town's people. She was great! She was full of love and at the same time full of hate reflected in her songs, her personal life, her eyes and her body language. Standing ovations! But it was not what she dreamed of, not what she trained for. I felt so sad for her.Clairvoyance brought us together. . I loved her. She loved me..
